Welcome to the Interactive APA Practice Exercises. Many people are required to use APA (American Psychological Association) referencing when presenting assignments as part of their higher education studies. Others might need to refresh their memory of this referencing style when writing academic papers. This set of interactive exercises is intended to allow a range of users to develop and practise skills in using APA referencing style.

These exercises are not intended to be a replacement for using the APA Manual, or other relevant reference sources – more as a complement to other print-based or electronic guides. The exercises which follow are designed to prepare the user for the most typical referencing requirements they are likely to need for their study or research; the APA Publication Manual should be consulted for less standard entries.

The exercises are divided into three main areas.

Reference exercises: Individual entries for a reference list (including journals, books, electronic media, and other "typical" entries), then compiling the reference list.
Title page: Preparing a title page.
Citations in text: In-text citations and quotations.

These have been organised in such a way that the novice user will be able to build on skills as they progress through the sequence in which we have presented tasks. However, more experienced users of APA style may wish to start at the point where they feel they need most help. All users may move backwards and forwards between sections if they choose, and exercises may be attempted as many times as you wish. Please refer to the guidelines for navigation and help within this resource.

We hope you find this resource useful.
